Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day is a global event celebrated annually on the third Wednesday of November. It is a chance for businesses all over the world to showcase how GIS can be used and to inform people about the applications of this technology.
GIS Day was initially created in 1999, inspired by consumer advocate Ralph Nader and promoted by GIS company Esri. Nader thought people could learn about geography and how to incorporate GIS into day-to-day activities.
What is GIS?
Geographic information systems integrate, store, edit, analyze, share, and display geographic information, allowing users to visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. Esri has demonstrated how GIS benefits many different industries and organizations. GIS can be used to help with record keeping, reporting, cost savings, and better communication with the public.
